A dead battery can ruin any driver’s day. The battery’s main function is to provide the initial electrical charge that starts the engine. A problem with the battery can make starting your car difficult or even impossible. As your Ford dealer in Eveleth, MN, we’d like you to know some signs that you need to visit us for a new car battery.

Your Battery Is Old

Despite its importance, a car battery has a relatively short life. On average, a battery will need replacement every three to five years. Its lifespan can also be reduced by additional factors like the external temperature, diving conditions, and other problems in the electrical system. Although the battery will show signs that it’s failing, a battery test will give a clear indication of its health and remaining life.

We recommend that you visit us for a battery test when your battery is three years old. Our computerized battery tester will identify any potential weaknesses in your battery, which allows you to more easily plan for its replacement. If your battery is healthy, we recommend a further battery test a year later. If your battery is failing, we can easily replace it for you.

Loose Connections

Your battery has two connectors, a positive and a negative, that connect the battery to the electrical system. These connectors are tightened securely to allow electricity to flow into and out of the battery. Electricity can’t flow through a gap, which makes a secure connection vital. These connectors can loosen slightly over time, and this will present a problem.

When you’re driving, all engine components are subject to minute movements. Over time, these movements can cause a slight gap to form between the battery terminals and their connectors. If this happens, the battery warning light will illuminate and your battery will stop supplying electricity. Our technicians will examine the connectors and tighten them to fix this problem.

Dim Lights

Dim headlights are usually a sign that the bulbs are failing and need replacement. They can also be a sign that your battery is failing. When your engine is switched off, the battery is responsible for supplying electricity to all your car’s systems. If your battery is failing, it may not have enough power to allow the lights to shine as brightly as they should.

You can test for a battery problem by noting the brightness of your headlights and cabin lights when the engine is off. Start your engine and check the brightness of the lights again. When your engine is running, the alternator supplies power to the lights. If the lights are brighter when the engine is running, you have a battery problem. We’ll test your battery and install a new one if required.
