Make the Drive: 3 Fishing Spots Near Eveleth, MN

1. Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park

Our favorite place to fish within driving distance of Eveleth is the Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park at 1302 McKinley Park Rd. Lake Vermilion is an excellent fishing spot, in part, due to its size. It spans 40,000 acres, making it one of the 10 largest lakes in the state. This massive lake is home to many fish species, including: 

• Walleye
• Northern pike
• Musky
• Smallmouth bass
• Largemouth bass

If you want to enjoy a weekend trip with your family, this state park is a great place to go. There are eight camper cabins that can be reserved year-round, featuring a picnic table, fire ring, grill, and more. There is also a rustic campground that can only be accessed by water, but it can’t be reserved. If you want to camp on the island in Lake Vermilion, we recommend planning your trip for a weekday.

2. Bear Head Lake State Park

Another place we enjoy fishing is the Bear Head Lake State Park at 9301 Bear Head State Park Rd. This state park features 23 miles of lakeshore and a fishing pier that is great for fishing. Like the Lake Vermilion-Soudan state park, this state park is home to many fish species, including crappies, walleye, bass, and trout. There are several lakes in this park, and it ​serves as much more than an excellent fishing spot. ​

For instance, it is a very popular spot to look for such birds as bald eagles, red crossbills, and red-breasted nuthatches. You can also hike through the woods looking for: 

• Black bear
• Moose 
• Wolves

3. Giants Ridge

Finally, we recommend fishing at Giants Ridge at ​6329 Wynne Creek Dr. Here, you can find two impeccable lakes that you can fish in and mountains that are ripe for exploration. ​There is something ​for mountain bikers, trail runners, and hikers alike in the mountains.
